In Journey to the West, the Lion Camel Kingdom on Shituo Ridge is ruled by three great Yaoguai — including the Golden Winged Great Peng, a figure tied to Buddhist cosmology.
Fang’s novel imports this mythic geography into a Yangzhou-like city under siege. Patrols and “boss” encounters dramatize occupation and fear without reducing the historical event to pure fantasy.
